Flat tyres are a pain at the best of times, but imagine having a 23-year-old record ruined by one! That’s exactly what happened to football-mad Andy James.
Die-hard Oxford United fan Andy — he’s been a fan since he was five — hadn’t missed a match, home or away, for 23 years: since February 1989, five months before the Berlin Wall was demolished.
But that proud achievement was ruined by two punctures. Travelling with friends to watch his side play Burton Albion, the 59-year-old set out for the game, along with a number of friends.
But just 20 miles from the ground, the BMW in which he was travelling suffered not one, but two punctures while they were travelling on the motorway.
“I’m gutted,” Andy, who has pledged to start his new run of games this weekend, admitted. “I did not expect to miss one so close to home.
“We hoped to get there just after kick-off — but we were taken to a garage about 3.30pm and it was 5pm by the time we got away from there. There was nothing we could do. We were all disappointed.”
Of course, if the BMW in which he had been travelling had been fitted with run-flat tyres, Andy’s proud unbroken record would still be running.
If there’s any consolation, he picked a good game to miss: Oxford got beat 4-0.
