Volvo’s new V40 Cross Country, which goes on sale across the UK next month, will go head-to-head with the BMW X1.
The V40 XC, which is expected to carry a £2000 premium over a equivalent V40 hatch, placing it around the £22,000 mark, is based on Volvo’s new five-door hatch.
Ride height has been increased by 40mm, to 173mm, and the XC gets a number of beefed-up styling tweaks.
In addition to an alloy-style body kit, there’s a black honeycomb grille. The option of 19in wheels on top-spec models is also new.
The range, despite its offroad aspirations, includes only one all-wheel-drive model which, surprisingly, is powered by the 250bhp 2.5-litre T5 petrol. It comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The rest of the V40 XC range includes a 1.6-litre petrol and three diesels.
